Continuing Production: Editing

On September 25th, Jack and I began the second and final step in the production process, editing the blog. From the beginning I made it clear to Jack I wanted our commercial to be very rich in editing. With this expectation in mind, Jack and I knew the editing process could take longer than usual. Jack and I also knew that altering aspects of color and image appearance would prove time consuming as well. However, I knew the work would pay off as this is an imperative part of the editing process. I began by cropping all the shots, so they all fit the same frame. Then I placed all the shots in the correct order. Then I chose the non-diegetic background music for the second scene. Instead of background music for the first scene, i decided it would be best and less overwhelming to have just diegetic sound. For the first scene I chose the background sound to be the sound of a television playing. This was to push the narrative that the subjects were watching TV. For the second beach scene I chose background music that was lively, fun, and had lyrics relating to the beach. Once all the shots were in order and the background music was chosen, I focused on altering the timing and duration of each shot. Many of the shots we filmed did not make it into the final commercial. To make the shots I wanted to include fit, I had to reduce them all. I had to reduce the shots in the first scene to around 2-4 seconds. Then, for the shots in the beach montage scene i had to reduce practically all the shots to less than a second. After I began to darken the house scenes by reducing the brightness and saturation. I did the opposite to the beach scenes, by brightening then and increasing the saturation. Now I have achieved a partially edited commercial that was 29 seconds long. Despite this progress, there was still much editing still left to be done.
