Production: Filming at Home

Today, Jack and I decided to film his scene. The location of the scene was at his house. I suggested meeting there around 6 PM as the sunset lighting would be a good convention. I made sure to bring the letter that I previously made. I also brought some red paint to splatter on the letter once we placed it on the doorstep. I felt that the thriller convention of including some kind of gore would be adequate for this scene.

After brainstorming what exact shots to film, we devised another title design idea. I suggested a low-angle shot of Jack, picking up the letter from the perspective behind the letter. He then suggested that we print out and glue on a "directed by" label along with my name and glue it on the back of the letter. I thought this was an amazing idea. However, when we went to print it, Jack was out of ink and paper. We had to scour his whole house to find blank paper. Then we had to wait for his father to find and retrieve the ink from his office. Finally, we were able to make the letter.

After this, we began filming. I was the cameraman this time filming on Jack’s phone as he used mine for the script. I followed the storyboard pretty much exactly except I added in more camera angles, shots, and movement variations. When it came time for the final scene, I filmed many scenes with my camera. I did this, especially near the end as I had an idea. My idea was to flash the vintage camera shots with the iPhone shots rapidly as Jack panicked at the site of the letter. I directed him to look around for the “stalker” watching him and the camera angles would serve as a perspective from the stalker. Additionally, I filmed multiple variations of Jack holding the letter itself so we could choose the best one for the fade-out. Lastly, I filmed some clips of the back of the letter with the “directed by” title sequence on it.
